Homemade Russian Dressing

Whisk together this very easy and versatile homemade Russian dressing for salads, sandwiches, slaws, or a dip. You probably already have everything to make it.

Guess what? Russian dressing isn’t from Russia. It’s because it used to be made with caviar. Some folks in Nashua, New Hampshire claim it was invented there. A lot of dishes aren’t named after their point of origin. No one in New York ever named their pizza New York Pizza. 😁

The reason this dressing, spread, and dipping sauce is so delicious and versatile is because it has all five flavor components of salt, sweet, sour, umami, and spicy.

Prepare a quick crudités raw vegetables platter and serve this as a dipping sauce. Make a slaw with cabbages, carrots, green onions, and celery salt. Include salmon or lumpfish caviar and make deviled eggs with it.

Whip it up for your authentic Reuben sandwich.

Russian Dressing is the basis for shrimp, lobster, or traditional Crab Louie salad. Make a salad of romaine lettuce, cooked asparagus, cucumbers, radishes, tomatoes, hard boiled eggs, and large pieces of fresh-picked crab meat. Pass the dressing at the table.

A very easy and versatile dressing for salads, sandwiches, and dipping.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Kewpie mayonnaise

  • 1/4 cup ketchup

  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice

  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 teaspoon sweet smoked Spanish paprika

  • favorite hot sauce, to taste

  • 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish

  • 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish

  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped onion

Directions

  • In a bowl whisk together the mayonnaise, ketchup, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, and paprika.
  • Whisk in hot sauce to taste.
  • Stir in relish, horseradish, and onion.
  • Refrigerate at least an hour or overnight.
